دعاء التلاميذ حتى يرجع الأستاذ عن قراره
A2 Arabic listening practice · Arabic · Curated for beginners
What is the difference between “dua” (دعاء) and “salah” (صلاة)?
Arabic has two words English flattens into “prayer”: صلاة, the structured ritual prayer performed five times a day, and دعاء, a personal plea to God in your own words, made anytime, for anything. دعاء is the one that saturates everyday speech — friends part with ادعيلي (“pray for me”), roughly Arabic’s “wish me luck.” Knowing the difference unlocks a huge amount of daily conversation.
The clip runs on the word’s charm: a teacher cancels class, so a student leads a دعاء جماعي — a group supplication — that he’ll reverse his decision (يتراجع عن قراره), and the teacher’s reaction is the punchline. From the same root د-ع-و come دعوة (an invitation — or a blessing someone makes for you) and the everyday shrug شو دعوتك؟ in Levantine, “what’s it to you?”
