💡 Did you know?

What does “بلاش” (balash) mean in Arabic?

بلاش (balāsh)
Arabic multi-use dismissal word
“forget it / never mind” — and also “for free”; both from the same root

بلاش (balāsh) does two seemingly opposite jobs: it means “for free / at no charge” and “forget it / never mind / don’t bother.” The connection is the root: بلا (bilā, “without”) + شي (shī, “thing”) = “without [a] thing.” Whether you’re getting something for nothing or waving something away, you’re dealing with the same nothing. Learners who only know the “free” sense are blindsided when a curt بلاش منه means “skip it.”

In this marriage-proposal scene, a suitor visits a father hoping to marry his daughter. When the father casually says بلاش منه — literally “without it” — he’s brushing off the offer of refreshments with a dismissive “don’t bother.” A second character echoes قاللك بلاش: “he told you بلاش,” underscoring just how final that one word sounds. Beyond dismissal, you’ll hear بلاش in markets (“يلا يا بلاش — come on, it’s free!”), in conditions (“يا هيك يا بلاش — either this or nothing”), and in soft negatives (“بلاش تبكي — don’t cry”). One small word; a lot of ground to cover.
