What does “ihlif” (احلف) mean in Arabic slang?

When an Arabic speaker hears something hard to believe, a one-word reply does the job: احلف! — literally the command “swear!” It works because oaths are woven into everyday speech: claims get backed with والله (“by God”), so demanding an oath is the natural way to say “you’re kidding — really?” You’re not actually asking anyone to take a vow; it’s the exact conversational slot of English “no way!”

The clip’s phone-loss panic shows the whole oath economy at work: one speaker demands the other swear about the missing موبايل — “احلف” — and the swearing duly follows, بربي (“by my Lord”). The root ح-ل-ف is the formal one too: حلف يمين is to take a legal oath, and a حلف is a pact or alliance — NATO in Arabic is حلف الناتو.
