What are the two meanings of “mean”?

mean
One word, two meanings
“Mean” can be a person who is not kind, or in math the average of numbers.

The word mean has more than one meaning. One mean is about people. A mean person is not kind. They say bad things or laugh at others. But there is a second mean in math. The mean is the average. You add the numbers, then you divide by how many numbers there are. So the same small word can be about a person or about numbers. The two meanings are not the same.

The clip shows both. First: “He is a mean boy. He is pointing, pointing, and laughing.” Then math: add 7, 20, and 11, then divide by three. So the mean of those three numbers is about 12.67.
