💡 Did you know?

What does “sure” mean as an answer in English?

sure
American casual "yes"
a relaxed, friendly way to say “yes, okay”

You know sure means “I am certain.” But there is a second use. People say sure to mean “yes, okay.” A friend asks, “Do you want to go eat?” You say, “Sure.” It is a relaxed, friendly yes. It is very common with friends. Beginners often only learn yes, but native speakers say sure all the time. So when someone says sure to your question, they are saying yes.

In the clip the teacher shows both uses: “I am sure of that” (certain), and then “Hey, do you want to go eat? Sure, yeah. Okay, sure.” Note the tone. A happy “Sure!” is a clear yes. A slow “Sure…” can mean “okay, I guess.”
