What does “je trouve que” mean in French?

trouver que
French opinion pattern
“I think / I find” — an opinion you have actually arrived at

Trouver is “to find”, and je trouve que is one of the most French ways to give an opinion: je trouve que c’est une bonne idée. It sits close to je pense que, with a shade of difference — penser is what you reckon, trouver is the impression you have arrived at from looking at something. It is everywhere in ordinary speech, and it makes a beginner sentence sound less recited.

It also works with a bare adjective and no que: je le trouve sympa (“I think he’s nice”), tu trouves ? (“you reckon?”). One wrinkle: in careful French the negative takes the subjunctive — je ne trouve pas que ce soit difficile — though the indicative is common in casual speech. The clip glosses it as penser que, juger que, estimer que, which is exactly the range.
