💡 Did you know?

Why is it “vous faites” and not “vous faisez”?

vous faites
French conjugation exception
the vous ending is -ez almost everywhere; être, faire and dire end in -tes

Learn one ending and most of the vous column comes free: vous parlez, vous finissez, vous prenez, vous voulez-ez every time. Three verbs refuse it, and they happen to be three of the most used in the language: vous êtes, vous faites, vous dites. Bank that -tes ending as a set of three, because vous disez and vous faisez are the slips that mark out a learner instantly.

The exception barely spreads. Redire copies direvous redites — but the other compounds go regular: vous contredisez, vous prédisez, vous interdisez. Worth pairing with the other trap in faire: nous faisons is pronounced “fe-zons,” with the vowel of je, not the ai the spelling promises.
