Schulsachen im Mäppchen: Farben, Formen und Verben
A1 German listening practice · German · Curated for beginners
What does “Reißverschluss” mean in German?
Reißen means to rip or pull; Verschluss means fastener or closure. Stack them together and you get Reißverschluss — a zipper, described by exactly what it does: a fastener you zip (literally “pull”) open. That single act of compounding captures how German turns verbs into vivid, descriptive nouns. Once you see the pattern, dozens of other compound nouns start to decode themselves the same way.
In the clip, the host opens her pencil case (Mäppchen) and introduces it directly: “Mein Mäppchen hat einen Reißverschluss — mit dem Reißverschluss kann man das Mäppchen zu machen und auf machen.” (“My pencil case has a zipper — with the zipper you can close and open the pencil case.”) The same logic runs through words like Schreibtisch (write + table = desk), Kühlschrank (cool + cupboard = fridge), and Handschuh (hand + shoe = glove). German rarely borrows a foreign label when it can build a descriptive one instead.
