What does “ganz schön” mean in German?

The small-talk podcast recommends this line for the supermarket checkout: “War ganz schön voll heute.” Word for word that’s “completely pretty full” — but ganz schön has nothing to do with pretty. In front of an adjective it means “really, quite”: the store was seriously full. It’s one of German’s favorite understatement intensifiers, and small talk runs on it.

Ganz schön kalt, ganz schön teuer, ganz schön anstrengend — the pattern usually flags a mild, companionable complaint, which is precisely what German small talk is for. As the podcast puts it: in Germany small talk is kurz, aber höflich — short but polite. One sentence about the weather or the crowds, ein Lächeln, and that already counts as socializing.
