💡 Did you know?

What does “strand” mean in Hungarian?

strand
Hungarian word for any public bathing spot, not just the sea
the local swimming spot — a lake shore, a thermal pool, a city lido

Strand is the word Hungarians reach for whenever there’s water to swim in — a lake shore, a thermal pool, even a city lido, not just an ocean beach. Landlocked Hungary built its whole summer culture around strandok: grassy lawns, sun loungers, and lángos stalls ringing a swimming area. At Lake Balaton, the country’s biggest lake, strand is simply where everyone spends the day.

Hungarians nickname Balaton “a magyar tenger” (the Hungarian sea) precisely because a landlocked country still needed somewhere to have a beach holiday. The clip lists Siófok, Balatonfüred, and Keszthely as popular Balaton towns, each built around its own strand — and notes that Badacsony, famous for wine instead, is one of the few lakeside towns without a big one.
