What does “bemutatkozik” mean in Hungarian?

Bemutat means to present or show somebody. Add -kozik and the action turns back on you: bemutatkozik, “to introduce oneself.” That -kodik / -kedik / -ködik family of endings is Hungarian’s reflexive workshop, and it is why a self-introduction is egy bemutatkozás — a word with nothing resembling “self” anywhere in it.

The same machinery: mosakodik (washes himself), öltözködik (gets dressed), fésülködik (combs his hair), borotválkozik (shaves). Compare the plain transitive originals — mos is “to wash [something],” öltöztet “to dress [someone].” The noun bemutatkozás is what you are asked for on the first day of a class, at a job interview, and, in this video, in the comments.
