What does “korek” mean in Polish?

A korek is a cork — the thing you pull out of a wine bottle. It’s also what Polish drivers sit in on the way home: a traffic jam. Stoję w korku means “I’m stuck in traffic,” literally “I’m standing in a cork.” The image is exactly right — cars squeezed into a bottleneck like a stopper in a bottle — and it’s the everyday word you’ll hear in every radio traffic report.

Julia ends her office day with it: czasem stoję w korku — “sometimes I’m stuck in a jam,” and there’s nothing to be done, muszę jechać w tym korku. The plural works too: korki na drogach, “jams on the roads.” Bonus meaning: in older homes, korki are also the electrical fuses — when the power goes out, Poles say wybiło korki.
