What does “przedwiośnie” mean in Polish?
Poland has a fifth season with its own name: przedwiośnie, literally “pre-spring” (przed + wiosna). It’s the muddy, thawing stretch between winter and spring — as Julia puts it in this clip, ani to zima, ani to wiosna: “neither winter nor spring.” The snow is going, nothing is green yet, and Polish decided that in-between state deserved a word of its own.
The word carries literary weight too: Przedwiośnie (1924) is Stefan Żeromski’s famous novel, read by every Polish student, which uses the not-yet-spring season as a metaphor for newly independent Poland. For the calendar itself, the clip gives you the core four — wiosna, lato, jesień, zima — plus the pattern pory roku, “times of the year,” for seasons.
