What does “estar” mean in Portuguese?
Portuguese has two verbs for “to be,” and estar is the one for how things are right now — moods, locations, weather, anything passing. Its present tense is eu estou, você/ele está, nós estamos, vocês/eles estão. So nós estamos com calor means “we’re hot” — hot at this moment, not as a permanent trait. Learn these four forms and you can say where you are and how you feel from day one.
The split is the heart of A1 Portuguese: ser is for lasting identity (ela é brasileira, “she’s Brazilian”), while estar is for temporary states (ela está cansada, “she’s tired right now”). That’s why feelings and conditions take estar: estou com fome (“I’m hungry”), está chovendo (“it’s raining”).
