What does “canteiro” mean in Portuguese?

Canteiro is the garden bed a succulent sits in — the patch of earth, not the pot (vaso) it might otherwise be planted in. But the word leads a double life: on a construction site, canteiro de obras names the whole site — tools, materials, workers' huts and all. One word, two very different plots of ground: one grows plants, the other grows buildings.

The word traces back to Latin canthus, “rim of a wheel,” which shifted to mean the edge of a plot of land and eventually the plot itself — how a wheel rim became a flowerbed. There’s a third, rarer sense too: a canteiro can be a stonemason, someone who carves cut stone (cantaria) — a trade name built on the same root as the building-site meaning.
