Why does Russian cursive т look like the letter m?

In Russian курсив, lowercase т looks almost identical to a Latin m — and lowercase г can be mistaken for ч. These aren’t typos: they’re the standard handwritten and italic forms taught in Russian schools. Most learners hit a wall the first time they encounter a cursive text, because the letters they memorised in print suddenly seem to vanish.
