Ponerse plus a color means “to turn” that color. So los ojos se ponen rojos means “the eyes turn red.” It works with feelings too: me pongo nervioso (“I get nervous”) or se pone triste (“he/she gets sad”). The forms are me pongo, te pones, se pone — a simple, everyday way to say that someone or something turns a color or a mood.
The clip says los ojos se ponen rojos when we cry or get smoke in them. Compare es rojo (“it is red,” all the time) with se pone rojo (“it turns red” right now). For people, ponerse rojo can also mean to blush.
