What does “ручка” mean in Russian: hand, pen or handle?
Она поднимает ручку, но это не помогает
A1 Russian listening practice · Standard Russian · Picked for people who know a little
Ручка is the small, affectionate form of рука, “hand,” so to a toddler ручку наверх! means “little hand up!” The same word is also the everyday Russian for a pen and for a door handle: things you hold in your hand. Ask a Russian for ручка in an office and you get a pen; say it to a baby and you get a tiny hand.
Context does all the work: дай ручку can mean “give me the pen” or, to a child, “give me your hand” when crossing the road. Ручка двери is the door handle, and ручка on a pot or a bag is its handle too. Here a parent keeps asking little Аня for ручку наверх, пожалуйста, and the hand goes up but it still doesn’t help.
