What does “non stai bene” mean in Italian?

Literally, non stai bene means “you’re not well,” and it is genuinely used that way about illness. But thrown at a friend mid-argument, with the weight on bene, it means “you’re out of your mind.” It’s the short form of non stai bene con la testa, and tone does all the disambiguating: a concerned voice means health, an exasperated one means you’re crazy.

The clip stacks the register in three seconds: “Ma tu non stai bene, ma tu non puoi stare bene. Tu non sei una persona normale… devi andare in analisi.” Andare in analisi is the everyday Italian for being in therapy (from psicoanalisi), and between friends it lands as a jab, not advice. Milder neighbours worth having: ma sei matto?, sei fuori (“you’re out of it”), dare i numeri.
