What is the Amikumu app?

Amikumu
Esperanto-born app
a real app for finding nearby speakers of your language — Esperanto’s, or any of 7,500 others

This creator walks through a new update to Amikumu, an app she uses to find fellow Esperanto speakers nearby. It was built in 2017 by two Esperantists, Richard Delamore and Chuck Smith, who realized there was no easy way to find out who around them spoke the language — a modern, GPS-based answer to the same problem Pasporta Servo solved for travelers decades earlier.

Chuck Smith isn’t a one-project figure in Esperantujo either — he also founded the Esperanto Wikipedia and contributed to Duolingo’s Esperanto course. Amikumu has since grown well beyond its original purpose, now covering roughly 7,500 languages worldwide, but its first, founding use case was exactly this: two Esperanto speakers finding each other nearby.
