What does “trilocale” mean in Italian?
Italian flats are sized by counting locali (rooms), not bedrooms. Trilocale means three rooms — and the catch is that the living room counts as one. So a trilocale has a living room plus two bedrooms, which an English speaker would call a two-bedroom. The pattern scales: bilocale is two rooms (one bedroom), monolocale is a studio. Read the prefix and you instantly know the size.
Locale comes from Latin locus (“place”), and in property-speak it means a room — the living room and bedrooms count, but kitchen and bathrooms usually don’t. So when this couple say they’re leaving their cramped bilocale to look for an ampio trilocale with due bagni, they’re upgrading from one bedroom to two.
