짝짓기와 착즙기, 아내의 한마디 오해
B1 Korean listening practice · Korean · Curated for intermediate learners
What does “ilsibul” mean in Korean?
At a Korean register the card question is 일시불로 하시겠어요, 할부로 하시겠어요? — “all at once, or in instalments?” 일시불 is 一時拂, “payment at one time”; 할부 is 割賦, “split payment,” and Korean cards offer it on almost anything: 3개월 할부, three monthly instalments, often 무이자 (interest-free). 일시불로 해주세요 is the answer that ends the exchange.
The pair drives the joke here. A husband half-wakes to his wife asking 우리 착즙기 살까? (“shall we buy a juicer?”) but hears 짝짓기, “mating.” He is still recovering when she asks whether to put it on 할부 or 일시불 — the moment he works out that they have been having two different conversations.
