What does “배려” mean in Korean?
배려 (baeryeo) is the everyday Korean word for thoughtful consideration — noticing what someone around you needs and accommodating it before they ask. It’s less a single act of kindness than a social reflex: giving a tired person room to rest, softening a request, holding a door of attention open. Korean culture treats this quiet attentiveness as basic courtesy, not an extra favor.
배려 is Sino-Korean, written 配慮 — roughly “allotting thought” toward another person. The verb is 배려하다 (baeryeohada, “to be considerate”), and a considerate personality is 배려심 (baeryeosim, literally “consideration-heart”). What makes this clip memorable is where the minister points the word: she argues we already show 배려 to a stressed friend — giving them rest, gentle encouragement — then asks why we don’t extend the same to an exhausted forest. Her proposed “national park stress index” (국립공원 스트레스 지수) is 배려 institutionalized: measure nature’s strain so we can accommodate it in advance, the way you’d read a tired person’s mood. It’s a vivid example of how 배려 in Korean isn’t just politeness — it’s proactive care aimed at whoever, or whatever, can’t easily ask for it.
