What does “meccha” mean in Japanese?

めっちゃ (meccha) is casual Japanese for “super” or “really” — めっちゃいい (“super good”), めっちゃ重い (“really heavy”). It began as Kansai (Osaka-area) slang but is now everywhere in young, casual speech across Japan. Think of it as the relaxed cousin of textbook とても: you’d say めっちゃ with friends, but keep とても for a formal email.

You’ll also hear the fuller めちゃくちゃ (as in めちゃくちゃ重い, “insanely heavy”) and shorter めちゃ. In this Kansai-flavored clip, めっちゃ rides along with other dialect markers: 〜やん (“…right?”, standard 〜じゃん / だよね) and 食おうか (“shall we eat?”). Keep めっちゃ for speech, not writing.
