What does “samideano” mean in Esperanto?

John opens this clip the way countless Esperanto videos do: “Karaj samideanoj” — “dear fellow-Esperantists.” Samideano is built from sama (same) + ideo (idea) + -ano (member of), and it means someone who shares “the idea” — not just the language, but the movement’s original hope of a shared, neutral second tongue. There’s no clean one-word translation, which is part of why Esperanto speakers still reach for it themselves.

The word dates to around 1890, coined as a friendlier alternative to the more technical samlingvano (“same-language person”). It has since drifted slightly wider — any two people who share a cause, not only Esperantists, can be called samideanoj of each other — but its home use is still exactly what this clip does with it: greeting an audience of strangers as already belonging to something in common.
