What is the “Pasporta Servo” in Esperanto culture?

Pasporta Servo
Esperanto institution
a worldwide, Esperanto-only free-lodging network — decades before Couchsurfing

John is weighing whether to use the Pasporta Servo — a directory of Esperanto speakers around the world who host fellow speakers for free, no money changing hands, the shared language standing in for the trust a stranger would otherwise need to earn. It began as an Argentine project in 1966 and has run as a proper published directory since 1974: long-distance, free, stranger-hosting travel that predates Couchsurfing.com by decades.

It’s still run today by TEJO, the World Esperanto Youth Organization, and moved fully online in 2008. The name is transparent Esperanto: pasporto (passport) + servo (service) — your passport into a network that only exists because everyone in it already speaks the same constructed language.
