What does “ecco” mean in Italian?
Ecco is the word Italian dictionaries never quite pin down. Hand someone an object and it means “here you go” (ecco il libro). Suddenly understand something and it means “aha, now I get it.” Tack it onto a verb and it means “I’m coming!” (ecco, arrivo). Attach a pronoun and it fuses: eccomi (here I am), eccolo (there he is). Same four letters, completely different meaning — the tone does the work.
Ecco a lei is the polite “here you are” a shopkeeper or cashier says handing over your change or purchase. Eccoci means “here we are”; eccola, “there she is.” It is one of the most-used words in spoken Italian precisely because it is a verbal pointing finger — it presents, confirms, or stalls, depending on the music you give it.
