What does “gugyeonghada” mean in Korean?

구경하다 fills a gap English needs three verbs for. It is browsing a shop without buying, sightseeing in a new city, and standing there watching something happen. 시장을 구경하다 is wandering a market for the fun of it. And 그냥 구경만 할게요, “I’m just looking,” is the sentence that gets a Korean shop assistant to leave you in peace.

In this folk tale the farmer sells his silk, then 시장을 구경하다 stumbles onto a watermelon, which a trader happily sells him as a donkey’s egg. Two relatives worth knowing: 구경거리, a spectacle or an attraction, and 불구경 (“fire-watching”), the word for standing around gawking at someone else’s disaster.
