What does “örökzöld” mean in Hungarian?
Mit ültessünk árnyékos kertbe: hortenzia vagy babérmeggy?
A2 Hungarian listening practice · Standard Hungarian · Curated for beginners
Örökzöld is örök, “eternal,” welded to zöld, “green”: a plant that keeps its leaves through winter. Hungarian then borrowed its own compound for music and film, exactly as English did — egy örökzöld sláger is an evergreen hit, the song that never dates. Learn the plant sense in a garden and the cultural sense arrives free.
Örök alone carries real weight: örökre (forever), örökké (eternally), örökség (inheritance), örökölni (to inherit). The garden contrast here is a practical one — hydrangea is spectacular in summer but bare in winter (se virág, se levél, “neither flower nor leaf”), while cherry laurel stays örökzöld and copes with shade.
