Is it “el azúcar” or “la azúcar” in Spanish?
Doña Florinda cuestiona a El Chavo como mesero
B1 Spanish listening practice · Mexican Spanish · Curated for intermediate learners
Gender in Spanish does not always follow logic: azúcar (sugar) is normally masculine, el azúcar, while sal (salt) is feminine, la sal. The two sit side by side on every table, which makes them a classic trap. Dictionaries do accept la azúcar too, especially in speech, but el azúcar is the standard form. La sal is not negotiable.
In this scene Doña Florinda corrects El Chavo: no se dice la azúcar, se dice el azúcar. He then repeats the correction and slips on the next word, saying el sal, and she has to fix him again: la sal. Other pairs that trip learners: el mar / la mar (both accepted), el problema, el día, la mano. When in doubt, check the dictionary, not the ending.
