What does “indomi” mean in Iraqi Arabic?
In Iraqi Arabic, the noun اندومي (indomi) has stopped meaning “Indomie brand instant noodles” and started meaning instant noodles in general. It’s a brand-as-genericized-word, the way Americans say “Kleenex” for any tissue or “Xerox” for any photocopy. Iraqis ask for indomi expecting any brand will do.
The clip shows a kid buying indomi on credit (اب دين, ab dayn) at the corner shop, then scheming to grab a second pack. The whole exchange depends on the everyday Iraqi corner-shop economy where the small grocer keeps a tab for regulars. Indomi on credit is a tiny ritual most Iraqi kids of any era know.
