What does “macecha” mean in Czech?

This speaker calls herself a “third parent,” reframing a loaded word: she talks about «jaké je to v dnešní době být macechou» (“what it’s like being a stepmother nowadays”). In Czech, macecha (stepmother) drags a fairy-tale shadow behind it, the zlá macecha (“wicked stepmother”) of Cinderella and Snow White.

That’s the point of her TEDx talk: the patchworková rodina (blended family) is ordinary now, and the word needs rescuing. Compare the warmer nevlastní matka (“non-own mother”) and you feel how much weight one noun can carry. Czech fairy tales gave macecha its menace; modern families are taking it back.
