💡 Did you know?

Why do Flemish speakers say “onze Maarten” instead of just “Maarten”?

onze + first name
Flemish family-warmth marker
'Onze Maarten', the Flemish habit of putting 'our' in front of a relative’s name

Flemish speakers often slip onze (“our”) in front of a family member’s first name: onze Maarten, ons ma (“our mom”), onze pa. The construction works as a possessive that doubles as a marker of in-group warmth. You’d say onze Maarten about your brother to another family member, but never about a stranger; the onze signals “this is one of us.” Netherlands Dutch speakers don’t use this pattern.

In this clip, two Flemish brothers wonder if onze Maarten is at home and discuss saving someone named Roos. The onze puts both speakers inside the family before any plot detail is spoken.
