Waarom jouw loterijlogica een denkfout bevat
B1 Dutch listening practice · Dutch · Curated for intermediate learners
What does “denkfout” mean in Dutch?
Denkfout splits cleanly in two: denken (to think) + fout (mistake). That anatomy is the unlock — Dutch glues a stem of denken onto almost anything to build a family of “thought” words: denkwijze (way of thinking), denkpatroon (thought pattern), denkproces (thinking process). Once you see the prefix, you can read — and build — the whole family on sight.
In the clip, the speaker is about to skip a lottery ticket whose numbers read 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 — because it looks too unlikely to win. Then comes the correction: “Dat is een denkfout.” The sequence 1–6 has exactly the same probability as any other combination; the gut feeling that it looks wrong is itself the fallacy. It’s a crisp, real-world example of what denkfout names. Beyond the lottery, the word covers any reasoning slip — a miscalculation, a cognitive bias, or a flawed assumption. You’ll hear it in debates, science journalism, and everyday Dutch conversation wherever someone has reasoned themselves into a corner.
