What does “n’a rien à voir avec” mean in French?

French uses voir (“to see”) in a phrase that has nothing to do with sight. N’avoir rien à voir avec means “to have nothing to do with” or “to be nothing like.” You use it when two things seem connected but are not. So ça n’a rien à voir does not mean “there is nothing to see” — it means “that is something completely different.”

In the clip the speaker changes the subject and says: “je vais vous parler d’un sujet qui n’a rien à voir avec les élections” — “I’m going to talk about a topic that has nothing to do with the elections.” The verb changes with whoever you are talking about: ça n’a rien à voir (“that has nothing to do with it”), je n’ai rien à voir là-dedans (“I have nothing to do with it”), ils n’ont rien à voir l’un avec l’autre (“they are nothing alike”). The avec is optional — drop it and you get a shorter, very natural cut: ça n’a rien à voir !
