Parents et formulaires de rentrée scolaire, un sketch
B1 French listening practice · French · Curated for intermediate learners
What does “la rentrée” mean in French?
Two parents drown in back-to-school paperwork, and one finally snaps: «c’est plus une rentrée, c’est un dossier du FBI» (“this isn’t a back-to-school anymore, it’s an FBI file”). La rentrée is the great French return: the moment in early September when school, work, and the whole country switch back on after the long summer.
It’s far bigger than “first day of school.” There’s la rentrée scolaire (school), la rentrée littéraire (the autumn flood of new books), even la rentrée politique. The forms in this sketch, assurance scolaire and demande de bourse (grant application), are its paperwork rite of passage. For the French, la rentrée is a national reset button.
