What does “Thronfolgerin” mean in German?
Thronfolgerin looks daunting at first, but it splits into three clean pieces: Thron (throne) + Folge (the act of following) + -in, which marks a woman. Put them together and you have the woman who follows on the throne — the heir. German often builds words this way, locking several smaller parts into one long compound. Once you spot the pieces, the meaning falls into place.
Spoken line: “Parallel dazu erfüllt Leonor ihre Pflichten als Thronfolgerin.” — “At the same time, Leonor carries out her duties as heir to the throne.” The -in ending makes the female form of the word: a male heir would be Thronfolger. You can see the same ending at work in other titles from this clip: Kronprinzessin (crown princess) also uses a feminine marker. More royal words built from familiar parts: König (king), Königin (queen), Kronprinz (crown prince). Plain examples: - Sie ist die Thronfolgerin. — She is the heir to the throne. - Der junge Prinz ist der Thronfolger. — The young prince is the heir to the throne. Say the word: long “o” in Thron, and the -in at the end has a light, short vowel — closer to a weak e sound than a strong “een.”
