What does “zurückhaltend” mean in German?
When the show gets cancelled, the report says the host commented on it “zurückhaltend” — in a guarded way. You then hear why: he said he did not want to and was not allowed to say more. So here the word does not mean shy; it means a careful choice to hold back and not take a side. When you hear it, the speaker usually shares very little.
In the clip: “äußerte sich dazu in der Süddeutschen Zeitung zurückhaltend” — “commented on it in a guarded way in the Süddeutsche Zeitung.” The word describes someone who holds back and stays careful instead of speaking openly. Plain examples: - “Sie blieb zurückhaltend.” — “She stayed guarded / kept her distance.” - “Er reagierte zurückhaltend auf die Frage.” — “He answered the question carefully, without saying much.” - “Die Firma war zurückhaltend mit Details.” — “The company gave few details on purpose.” Usage notes: It often means a careful, polite holding-back — about opinions, feelings, or information. Depending on the situation it can mean reserved (a quiet person) or non-committal (not taking a clear side). Tone is usually neutral, sometimes positive (tactful), not an insult.
