What does “kréta” mean in Hungarian?

Say kréta to a Hungarian and they think of two things at once. Literally it means “chalk.” But KRÉTA is also the country’s mandatory online school register — grades, absences, parent messages — whose acronym was clearly chosen so it would spell the classroom word for chalk. The clip plays the joke straight: a dad asked to justify an absence “in KRÉTA” pretends not to know whether kréta means the Greek island or a child’s scribble.

KRÉTA (from Köznevelési Regisztrációs és Tanulmányi Alaprendszer) has been compulsory in state schools since 2017, so “beírták a Krétába” — “they logged it in KRÉTA” — is now ordinary parent-speak for a grade or a demerit. Bonus: Kréta is also the Hungarian name for the island of Crete, the third reading the dad jokingly reaches for.
