💡 Did you know?

What does “tételt húz” mean in Hungarian?

tételt húz
Hungarian exam ritual
To “draw a ticket” — randomly pick your topic card at an oral exam.

At a Hungarian oral exam, especially the érettségi (the secondary-school leaving exam), you don’t choose your topic — you draw it. Tételt húz, literally “to pull a topic”, is the nerve-wracking moment of picking a numbered card that decides which prepared subject you must speak on. Tétel here means an exam “topic” or “item”, and húz is the everyday verb “to pull/draw”, the same one used for drawing a card or a lottery number.

Related: szóbeli (oral exam), tételsor (the full list of topics), érettségi (school-leaving exam / matura). Húz is highly reusable — húzd meg (“pull it”), sorsot húz (“to draw lots”). In the clip the speaker relives the panic of the szóbeli érettségi: having studied every topic, then drawing the one card whose tétel they hadn’t read a single letter of.
