What does “nem terem a fán” mean in Hungarian?
Terem is the verb for a plant or tree to “bear” or “yield”, so X nem terem a fán is the Hungarian cousin of “money doesn’t grow on trees”: the thing in question is not free, automatic, or effortless. Hungarian children hear the full proverb — a pénz nem terem a fán — after begging for a toy. The frame is reusable: swap in any noun to argue that it costs sweat and money to make.
Terem also gives termés (harvest, yield) and termék (product) — all about something being produced. In the clip the creator stretches the idiom for effect, saying a video “nem csak úgy terem a YouTube fán” — it doesn’t just sprout on the YouTube tree — to explain how much hidden labour and cost sits behind each upload before she moved the podcast to Patreon.
