What does “chutar” mean in Portuguese slang?

Chutar means “to kick,” like kicking a ball. Informally it also means to take a guess when you’re not sure. Eu chutaria Pernambuco is “I’d guess Pernambuco.” The noun works too: um chute is a guess, and chutei tudo after a test means “I guessed on everything.” Picture kicking the ball at the goal and hoping it goes in.

In Brazil this use comes up all the time, in quizzes, exams and guessing games. Chutar alto (“kick high”) means to guess a number that’s way too big. Dar um palpite and adivinhar are other ways to say “guess.” This accent-guessing game is full of it: every answer is a chute until someone says acertou! (“you got it!”).
