What does “entrega” mean in Portuguese besides “delivery”?

On an app or a parcel, entrega just means “delivery.” But when people talk about love, work or raising kids, entrega means giving yourself fully: devotion, commitment. So paciência, entrega, responsabilidade isn’t a shipping checklist. It’s what being a parent takes. Both meanings come from entregar, “to hand over.” In the second one, you’re handing over yourself.

The reflexive entregar-se works the same way: ela se entregou ao trabalho means “she threw herself into her work.” In football, o time se entregou can mean the team gave up. In this clip, a mother talks about adopting an 18-year-old daughter. People told her she had skipped the hard part. Her answer: it still took entrega.
