What does “vânătă” mean in Romanian?

In Romanian the colour for “bruised” isn’t black or blue but vânătă — a dark blue-purple, the shade of a fresh bruise. So era vânătă toată means “she was black-and-blue all over.” The same word names a vegetable that’s exactly that colour: vânătă (plural vinete) is the eggplant. One purple word, two everyday uses — battered skin and the thing in your salată de vinete.

The base adjective is vânăt (masculine) / vânătă (feminine): “livid, bluish-purple.” You’ll meet it for cold lips (buze vinete, “blue lips”) as well as bruises. It comes from Latin venetus, “Venetian / sea-blue” — the same Roman colour term that, oddly, ended up labelling both an eggplant and a black eye.
