Haul de la outlet Pandorf: reduceri, branduri și chilipiruri
B1 Romanian listening practice · Moldovan Romanian · Curated for intermediate learners
What does “chilipir” mean in Romanian?
A chilipir is a steal: something genuinely good that you grab for far less than it’s worth, like a designer piece at an outlet. It’s the word Romanians reach for when a price feels almost too lucky to be true. Note the plural is neuter — chilipiruri — so a whole haul of bargains becomes niște chilipiruri, exactly the satisfied brag a discount shopper wants to make.
Chilipir comes straight from Ottoman Turkish kelepir, one of hundreds of everyday Turkish borrowings left in Romanian after centuries of Ottoman contact — a layer that sits alongside the language’s Latin core. The same root gives chilipirgiu, a “bargain hunter,” built with the Turkish-origin agent suffix -giu; it carries a faintly mocking edge, hinting at someone who chases deals a bit too eagerly. So chilipir is the prize, and a chilipirgiu is the person forever hunting one.
