What is “kunya” in Arabic?
Across the Arab world, many people are addressed by a kunya (كنية): an honorary name made of Abu (“father of”) or Umm (“mother of”) plus a child’s name. Abu Jaleel literally means “father of Jaleel.” Once a man has a son, Abu + son’s name often replaces his given name in everyday address, and the same applies to Umm for mothers.
In this stand-up bit, the comedian insists that Abu Jaleel IS his real name. When the host pushes back, he defends it by pointing to Umm Kulthum, the legendary Egyptian singer whose stage name follows the Umm + name kunya format.
