Min stalker och hemliga designen på kepsen
A2 Swedish listening practice · Gothenburg Swedish · Curated for beginners
What does “keps” mean in Swedish?
Swedish took the English plural “caps” and made it a singular word: keps, one cap. So an English plural became the Swedish word for a single hat. The same thing happened with kex (a cracker), from English “cakes.” In this clip it is fun because the speaker uses both keps and caps for the same piece of merch — you hear the borrowed word and its English source side by side.
Keps means a cap with a brim — usually a baseball cap or flat cap. It comes from the English plural “caps,” the same move Swedish made with “cakes” to get kex (a cracker). In this clip the creator slips between “min keps” (my cap) and “designen på capsen” (the design on the caps), so you can still feel the English root close to the surface. There is a longer word, basebollkeps, but everyday speech just says keps.
