What does “une décharge” mean in French?
In French, décharger means “to unload,” but the noun une décharge is a rubbish dump or tip. They share a root, and that overlap powers a joke: two men caught loading bricks into a car claim they were “unloading” them — en train de décharger — and the cop snaps back ce n’est pas une décharge, “this isn’t a dump.” The same word that means “to unload” also names the one place you’re actually allowed to dump.
The pun turns on register and direction. Décharger literally means to take a load off — a truck, a gun (une décharge is also an electrical discharge or a volley of shots), or, jokingly, bricks. Une décharge as a place is short for décharge publique, the municipal tip; today you’ll also hear déchèterie (from déchets, “waste,” + trier, “to sort”). So the cop’s line lands twice: you weren’t unloading, you were helping yourselves — and even if you were, this building site is no dump for you to use. He finishes with vous remballez tout ça (“pack it all back up”), the verdict that the “unloading” story didn’t fly.
