Why do people say “have a nice day” is fake or insincere?
“Have a nice day” is something American shop workers say all the time when you leave a store. It sounds friendly, but not everyone believes it. In this clip, a Londoner says New Yorkers “can sound friendly with all that have a nice day stuff” — meaning the words are nice, but they can feel automatic, like something you say to everyone without really meaning it.
In Britain, “have a nice day” is used much less, and some British people find it a little strange or fake when they hear it from American service workers — the British writer Guy Browning once joked that the British can’t say the phrase without a hint of sarcasm. It’s a small phrase that says a lot about the difference between American and British small talk.
