What does “bestiole” mean in French?
“Une bestiole” is the friendly, slightly squeamish French word for any little creature — a bug, an insect, a creepy-crawly — especially when you don’t know exactly what it is. It’s informal and very common: “Il y a une bestiole sur mon bras !” is what you’d actually shout, not the textbook “un insecte.” The word carries a faint shiver of “ugh, what is that,” which is exactly why it fits any unexpected crawling thing.
It’s a playful diminutive of “bête” (beast/animal), so it literally frames the thing as a “little beastie.” Register is colloquial but inoffensive — you can use it in front of anyone. Handy when your vocabulary runs out: rather than freezing on the name of a specific bug, “une bestiole” covers spiders, beetles, larvae and mystery crawlers alike, and sounds natural every time.
